ICCP, MGPS/ICAF, and reverse osmosis services in the docking process

Take advantage of the dry-dock window to get the systems ready for the next cycle without missing the dry-dock deadline.

Docking is the only time when the entire hull is accessible. This is the time to inspect and replace ICCP and MGPS components that cannot be reached while the ship is in the water, and to service the desalinator when it is not under operating pressure. MCP Marine plans the scope of work in advance and coordinates closely with the shipyard’s schedule.

Before docking: planning

  • Analysis of the latest report and system logs
  • List of materials and spare parts (anodes, electrodes, gaskets, cables), ordered 60 days in advance. It takes about 40 days to import the anodes.
  • Defining the scope with management and the shipyard
  • Detailed budget by item

On the dike: ICCP

  • Visual inspection and measurement of each anode and each dielectric shield
  • Replacement of damaged or end-of-life anodes and reference electrodes
  • Protection of anodes and electrodes during sandblasting and painting of the hull
  • Checking the Grounding of the Shaft and Rudder
  • Insulation testing and system recommissioning prior to flooding the levee

At the dike: MGPS/ICAF

  • Replacement of Copper and Aluminum/Iron Anodes
  • Inspection and cleaning of seawater intakes and filters
  • Inspection of cables, cable glands, and hull penetrations
  • Recommissioning and Adjustment of the Control Unit

Reverse osmosis

  • General inspection of the desalination unit, replacement of membranes and pre-filters
  • Maintenance of High-Pressure Pumps and Valves
  • Water production and quality testing at the end of service
  • Gefico (official distributor in Brazil) and other manufacturers

After the docking

  • Recommissioning with the vessel in the water and measurement of the hull potential (reference DNV-RP-B401)
  • Final report with photos, measurements, replaced parts, and recommendations
  • Documentation for the shipowner and for the classification society’s survey

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book?
The service must be scheduled at least 30 days in advance. If you need to order anodes or other replacement parts, it’s best to do so 60 days in advance, because importing them takes about 40 days.

Do I need to replace all the anodes in the docking system?
Not necessarily. Replacement depends on the measured consumption and the remaining service life until the next testing. ICCP anodes from K.C. LTD, for example, last at least 15 years. The report indicates what to replace and why.

What if there are no scheduled dockings?
Many ICCP and MGPS repairs are performed while the ship is afloat, using divers. See “ICCP Repair and Anode Replacement Using Divers.”
